Year 11 Work Experience

All students undertaking work experience in Melbourne are now in the process of finalising the legal paperwork requirements.

2016 Work experience - 9th - 13th May

Work placements are an integral part of our VCAL program, with students attending a work place one day a week for much of the school year. We value the partnerships developed with local businesses and employers and appreciate their ongoing support of our students. Students have the opportunity to develop and extend "key employability" skills: communication, teamwork, problem solving, initiative and enterprise, planning and organisation, self management, learning and use of technology. helping to increase their value as potential employees.

The Year 11 Work Experience week provides a similar opportunity for VCE students (although condensed into one week).

In May, most of our year 11 students complete their Work Experience in Melbourne, staying in a large youth hostel near the Queen Victoria Market. Teachers supervise and support the students, but the emphasis was on developing independence and confidence within the work place as well as in negotiating the streets of Melbourne and its public transport. Students are placed in a range of different career areas: education, hospitality, social work, maintenance, building and construction, animal care. The school has a good network of employers who we work with every year, although students are strongly encouraged to contact employers and organise their own work placements. This ensures they work in an area they are interested in.

Our  students usually have  a fantastic, although tiring, time. Feedback from all employers is consistently excellent, with many commenting “we love Timboon kids”. Our students have an outstanding reputation with city employers - some employers only take students from Timboon P12 School.

For students participating in the Melbourne based work experience, we depart Timboon on Sunday 8th May at 1:00 pm to give us time to arrive in Melbourne safely and spend some time familiarising ourselves with the local area, including public transport location and key landmarks.

Occupational Health and Safety requirement

Before undertaking Work Experience placements, students need to have completed the online Safe@work Occupational Health and Safety Modules – the General Module and a specific module that relates to the work experience placement.

The Safe@Work Occupational Health and Safety modules completed for Year 10 Work Experience are valid for 12 months.

Some students are undertaking placements in a different industry from their Year 10 Placement, so will need to read the relevant information and complete another online test. They will be reminded of this next term.
